Xbox 360 Jasper

The newer Xbox 360 "Jasper" models use a smaller manufacturing process for the graphics chip, and so require less power. Less power means it runs cooler, requiring less fan workage which also draws less power. This makes the entire console much more reliable and quieter. The power supply is even smaller and uses fewer watts overall.

In short, if you are in the market for a new or used 360, you want to try to get a Jasper 360 unit if at all possible. They last longer, run cooler and are quieter.

So, since this "Jasper" label isn't plastered all over the box, you need to know how to tell the difference. Most of the newer Arcade units are Jaspers, but you still want to make sure before you plunk down your hard earned coinage.

The way to tell is to either buy one from someone advertising a Jasper unit (such as ebay - see below) or look at the label on the console serial sticker at the retailer.

The Xbox 360 retail box has a small cutout flap where the serial number is on on the console. The cashier generally will raise this flap and scan the barcode to attach the serial number of the console to your receipt. This ensures that any return would guarantee you're actually returning the unit you bought.

Raising this flap also exposes the power specs, which is where you can identify the innards of the 360:

Xbox 360 Jasper ID Tag

The area to the lower left of this sticker is what we're interested in. Right above "Made in China/Mexico/etc" you should see the power specs:

Jasper Serial Tag

See the 12.1 A there? That means the unit is rated for 12.1 Amps power draw. This is a Jasper unit.

If the number is higher, such as 14.2A for the Falcon model, it is not a Jasper, and has been made using the older manufacturing process.

You may also be able to confirm your findings with the power brick. The power brick may be rated for 150 watts or higher. The unit will only draw the power it needs, and the brick is rated up to that amount. This means some newer units have the older, higher wattage power bricks probably due to old stock, and using them is fine. If you have a 150 Watt brick, it is another confirmation of Jasper. However, having a higher rated brick doesn't mean it's not a Jasper. (You also can't see this info without opening the retail box.)

So, now that you've been edumacated about what, why and how to identify a Jasper 360, be sure to get one. To make things really simple, here are a few ebay listings for Jasper Xbox 360 units:

So this is Microsoft’s response to the Red Ring of Death. It seems 3 years too late don’t you agree?Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to put an intercool on every Xbox rather than developing a brand new model. As far as I know the failure rate on a 360 is around 54% and the intercool drops it to about 10% ,which is still higher than the wii and the PS3, but it reducing that rate by 500%.What this Jasper model will become is just a PR thing for Microsoft to say they’re fixing the problem for new buyers.

No it would not be easier or cheaper. It is not a brand new model, its a replaced motherboard which can run a 65nm GPU down from a 90nm GPU. Microsoft will end of saving money if anything since its cheaper to manufacture a smaller chip. This is also better for the end user seeing as how smaller chips draw less power and create less heat meaning smaller fans (which means quiter operation). It seems like anything microsoft does to correct their problem is met with criticism….

I plan on purchasing another 360 still knowing the gameplay is still better than the ps3, but still something is telling me to go with the ps3, All I want to know is that if I purchase the 360 elite with jasper is it still a question of not if but when it will break down. Rather go with reliability.

  4. I personally think most of the problems have been fixed with the latest Jasper models. They’re newly designed, use smaller fab process which makes everything cooler, and they’re just more reliable.

As reliable as a PS3? I don’t know, I think it would just come down to the dvd drive. It’s close enough in my opinion.

I would add that I also have a PS3 and a handful of games. Because of the controller and awful online for PS3, I rarely game on it. I think the last time I played something on it, besides a blu-ray, was at least 6 months ago. There is one exclusive title I’m interested in though, so that may change soon. However, I would never do without the 360.

I just got back from deployment in July and went and bought my 360 due to me trading it in prior to my departure. Figured no use for a year = sell it and rebuy new upon return. I bought from best buy not knowing about the new Jasper. I ended up with the old system…boy that thing out of the blue would lock up on Need for Speed Shift and other higher end games. I bumped into info regarding the Jasper and wondered “hym…who would take the time to let me find a Jasper in their buisness”…Gamestop was awesome…me and the guy were in the stock room opening boxes…10 boxes later we found an elite system with the Jasper…it’s updating as we speak…Try Gamestop if you need to open boxes to verify a Jasper. Most likely an elite system will be it as they are the highest sellers depleting the old systems faster. Hope my experience helps someone.
