Xbox 360 Warranty Extended to 3 Years For Red Ring Failures

Microsoft has extended the warranty on all Xbox 360 consoles.
The new warranty covers new and previously purchased Xbox 360s for three years, for the three flashing red light error only.
So, if you get a red ring of death (a.k.a. RROD, three red lights, circle of doom, etc.) hardware error, you’re covered. If you have a DVD Drive fail, GPU overheat, or other problem the extended warranty does NOT cover it. The one year warranty would apply.
However, the RROD has been a large percentage of failures, so this is better than nothing. (I have had 4 console failures with only one of them being a Red Ring issue.)
So, if you have a Red Ring error failure, don’t try to fix it, don’t open the box. Send it back for free repair.

Here is the new warranty FAQ : Xbox 360 New Warranty FAQ
And finally an open letter from Microsoft’s Peter Moore.

I have received the shipping email, but apparently MS do not provide a box to ship-contrary to what a lot of people state. How the hell am I going to box the 360 up without it getting smashed in transit?

MS does provide a box, bag and styrofoam for shipping. I just received the box yesterday and dropped it back off at UPS today.

The 3 red rings appeared on a Tuesday night. Tech support is open until 12:00 EST so I started the return process 9:00pm that night by calling 1-800-4MYXBOX. The ‘coffin’ came on Thursday, 2 days later. It took me all of 20 minutes to pack it up, stick the pre-paid sticker to the box and drop it off at my local UPS store which is conviently located 3 miles from my house.
2 Weeks later UPS delivered my Xbox360, all repaired for free!
OK folks, this whole thing stinks. But it was a painless process for me except the 2 week jonez of no games, no hd dvd.

Weird. I was told quite specifically that no box would be provide-and none was forthcoming. Missed a call from UPS today so hopefully that was my repaired 360. (or an empty box?)

Yeah I just got the 3 tonight. I was playing H3 then I decided to start playing Bioshock. It froze once…i restarted…froze again(in a diff. section of the game…rebooted and checked disc…then finally got the red lights. I thought at first it was over-heating, but turns out it wasn’t. My 360 is a 1st gen..(release date) and has lasted till now. I wanted to cry. Does anyone know if I keep my 360 cover and all the same…i have some stickers on it I don’t want to lose.

Ring Microsoft support and they will tell you if it is under warranty or not. You will need to take your HDD and front cover off. You will only need to send the bare bones box.

just got home from work and switched on my 360 to find the dreaded ring of death!!! the xbox has been modded to play my backup discs, so i’m guessing it’s not a warranty free fix for me….DAM!!! why are these consoles so badly manufactured!! Mr Gates could have invested more time and our money into the 360, i guess it’s about the profit made not the customers longterm satisfaction. I’ll just have to enjoy my PS3 a little more…when some games come out!!
