Xbox 360 Warranty Extended to 3 Years For Red Ring Failures

Microsoft has extended the warranty on all Xbox 360 consoles.
The new warranty covers new and previously purchased Xbox 360s for three years, for the three flashing red light error only.
So, if you get a red ring of death (a.k.a. RROD, three red lights, circle of doom, etc.) hardware error, you're covered. If you have a DVD Drive fail, GPU overheat, or other problem the extended warranty does NOT cover it. The one year warranty would apply.
However, the RROD has been a large percentage of failures, so this is better than nothing. (I have had 4 console failures with only one of them being a Red Ring issue.)
So, if you have a Red Ring error failure, don't try to fix it, don't open the box. Send it back for free repair.

And finally an open letter from Microsoft's Peter Moore.

Had RRD yesterday. Called Microsoft Support. They ask for some basic details (name, address, serial number). If you didnt register your Xbox they will do that for you, then give you the option of sending you postal details via email for you to print or send via snailmail. Either way you then need to put your xbox in a box ^^ put on postal note and return via UPS. All free (except the box!).
They do not need a copy of your receipt as they can check from the serial number when your box was manufactured and if within 3 yrs then receipt is not needed. I guess they may start asking for receipts when another year or so is passed.
advised it would take about 20-25days. I’m in the UK, so not sure about any other countries….

I have just had this problem with my Xbox and phoned the xbox support line (on the xbox website). They took the serial number, asked some general questions about the fault (colour of the power light etc) and took my phone and adress details. They then sent me an email with the UPS label on, which I then printed out and stuck on the front of a box (bought from the post office).
I packaged the xbox up and called UPS as instructed in the email from microsoft. The UPS guy came around the same afternoon and picked up the console. I should have it back within 25 days.
He said that he picks up about 5 a day, it really is a common problem.

I have an xbox 360 and have enjoyed it since Dec something, 2006. Last week I got the blinking red light of death. Called customer support who walked me through the basic “turn it off and reboot” then next was told to unhook everything and plug it back in. Of course, none worked.
So they’re sending me a pre-paid postage box for me to ship it back to them. They said 2-4 weeks. The rep was super apologetic and gave me a 6 month free Live subscription. I wasn’t really even complaining since my son plays it WAY more then me so I wasn’t as upset.
Now with MS giving out free 3 year warrenties for the Red Light of Death problems, that’s a big thumbs up in my book. I do have to agree that they might have rushed the 360 without thorough testing, but I got to really give it to them on this one.
Now as for Vista……

My 360 has just gone the way of the red rings. It’s all very well to give a thumbs up to MS for extending the warranties-but let’s face it, our refurbished/replacement 360s are just as likely to break as well surely?
