Xbox 360 Warranty Extended to 3 Years For Red Ring Failures

360 new warranty 3 years
Microsoft has extended the warranty on all Xbox 360 consoles.

The new warranty covers new and previously purchased Xbox 360s for three years, for the three flashing red light error only.

So, if you get a red ring of death (a.k.a. RROD, three red lights, circle of doom, etc.) hardware error, you’re covered. If you have a DVD Drive fail, GPU overheat, or other problem the extended warranty does NOT cover it. The one year warranty would apply.

However, the RROD has been a large percentage of failures, so this is better than nothing. (I have had 4 console failures with only one of them being a Red Ring issue.)

So, if you have a Red Ring error failure, don’t try to fix it, don’t open the box. Send it back for free repair.

And finally an open letter from Microsoft’s Peter Moore.

I just bought a premium version of the 360 a couple weeks ago and when I woke up this morning to check out the downloads, I had in progress, I found the three red lights. I have a couple of friends that had the infamous ring of lights, one was a launch box, one was close to a launch box. I bought mine 2 weeks ago! luckly mine started up again. Should I just bring it back to the store? or wait until it bricks out, and send it in potentialy another week from now.

It’s really up to you. You might want to take it back for exchange during your return period just to be on the safe side.

However, consider that a one time 3-red-light issue may not be a big deal. If the AV cable or HD isn’t seated all the way, it can cause the red ring.

If you have to send it back to MS at some point, you may be without it for at least a couple of weeks.

Hay, is it possible to get a refurb unit off ebay with the 3 red lights prob (or even a cant read disc problem), and be able to send it to Microsoft for free repairs, or at least for the $140 repair cost? I think this would work.

MS won’t repair a 360 that has been opened.

Risky idea there.

I advise everyone with the red ring of light problem to read this. If your xbox360 is not working, call xbox support and give them the propper information and they will fix it for free or they will give you a new xbox360. It will take around 2 weeks to be delivered to you but it is much smarter than trying to fix it on your own.
