Difference Between Xbox Live Silver and Gold

xbox live gold vs silver differences

I've seen this question come up a few times, so I thought I'd address it here.

The xbox.com page on the subject makes the answer as clear as mud.

The main difference is you get online multiplayer with Gold. With silver, you can download content, demos, trailers, arcade games, etc. You also get achievements and all basic Live functionality.

Punch it up to the Gold level of service, and you get to game with others around the globe, online on Live. So, for example, without Gold, your Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter experience is going to be limited to single player. On Xbox Live Gold, you get to play with your buds in multiplayer games on Live.

Some great deals can be found for Xbox Live Gold Memberships on these ebay listings:

I found this information quite easily on Xbox.com on the introduction page:

“There are two levels of service for Xbox LIVE. The Silver level is free and lets you download content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace, chat with friends, and share your gamer profile and achievements with other users. The Gold Level is a paid service with all of the Silver level benefits, plus with the ability to play multiplayer games online against other members of the Xbox LIVE community, create parties and join games with friends, and, if you’re a Netflix member, even watch streaming movies right on your Xbox 360.”

I’d understand if this information was not available in 2006 when this post was published, but there are rather recent comments here. “Much better answer”? “Ridiculous search”? Really?

  2. Actually, MK, the info is still difficult to find and not as clear as it could be at xbox.com. It has definitely been improved and is less ambiguous, however, the answers are not quick and clear as they should be.

    Thanks for dropping by.

On the UK Microsoft store (not the xbox.com site) I clicked on gaming -> XBox
and there was mention of free Xbox Live (Silver)…but no explanation of what this, was, what it did, and what the other levels were. A quick google threw up this site…thanks guys!

You’re all mugs! To play online on the PS3 costs nothing! And it’s mainly the same games – why part with £40 just because Microsoft tells you to?

  6. Brumben, well, to put it bluntly, the PSN sucks. (And yes I also own a PS3.)

No cross game chat, invites that don’t work, no party system – most games you can’t play with friends.

PSN is about where Xbox Live was on the original Xbox. Though I wish it were free, XBL will continue to get my money, at least for now, because the other free option just plain stinks.

lol psn laggs and it dousnt have any cool features like party syste, cross game chat. XBL wayyyyyyyyy cooler
