Repair Xbox 360 - 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run “Initial Setup” under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don’t want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

People in the UK I work as a consumer journalist and the below may help you - it is always good to know your rights. So even after the statutory 12 months guarantee you get in the UK you should still be able to claim a refund or a new console because it appears that this is a fault that is inherent in the machine. For more information visit www.which.co.uk For those in the US you may want to try Consuemrs Union.
• If your electrical appliance breaks down within the first 12 months of purchase, the manufacturers guarantee should cover the cost of any repair.
• After the first 12 months you may still be able to make a claim. A key statutory right is that whatever you buy must last for a reasonable length of time.
• A “reasonable time” can be anything up to six years after you’ve purchased depending on the product (five years in Scotland).
• If you want to make a claim, the breakdown must be a result of a defect present at the time of purchase. Though you needn’t have been immediately aware of it.
• Claims should be made with the retailer and not the manufacturer. To save you stress, contact the head office first. Be firm and explain that your product hasn’t lasted a reasonable amount of time and that you’d like it investigated and repaired or replaced if it turns out to be faulty.
• You may be asked to provide evidence if your product is older than six months. To do this simply contact an independent repairer and ask them to prepare a report. This needn’t be too expensive and you should be able to claim back up to £200 for the cost of repairers report.
• Once the problems has been identified as a manufacturing fault, contact the retailer and you’ll be entitled to a repair or a full or part refund depending on the problem and how much you’ve used the product.
P.S. if you do get your Xbox 360 repaired ask them to send a written report regarding the problem - this may help you if you need to make a claim with the manufacturer. My Xbox 360 has been repaired 3 times by Microsoft and its recently broken down again (3 red lights as usual).
