Repair Xbox 360 - 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run “Initial Setup” under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don’t want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

has anyone that bought a 360 after this day last year been charged for a repair after december 22? if so you should have either recieved a reimbursment check or you have been scanned. Microsoft recently extended the warrenty to within a year of purchase on ALL existing units. check my first comment from june 20th. Its the official statment released by XBOX on their website and remains there under the support page. Comment back if you have been charged for a repair within a year of your ownership and have not recieved a check.

I bought my Xbox in January 2007 and it gave me the 3 red lights last month. It’s been more than a month now and it can’t be repaired. Where do people like me go for repairs or replacement of the unit considering I live outside the US and Canada?
Microsoft should recall their units and repair or replace them for free.

Im absolutely disgusted, microsoft xbox 360 deserve to be boycotted, after all the money we as fans have put into this wasteful excuse of a project and in return we get a dodgy machine that has three red lights that come up. This has happened to me todya and im not happy in the slightest, therefore i ask as fellow frustrated fans that we do something about this and that we show microsoft exactly our pain, maybe we can set up a petition or something, email me: dynamyte_tierney@hotmail.com if you share my desire!

Here is how I fixed my 3 red lights problem:
Background
I have 360 with hard-drive and connected via cable to internet. Previous issue - faulty joystick. But this was replaced and worked fine for a few weeks until - the dreaded 3 lights.
1. My son reported that the xbox would not work…
after a few days of complaining
2. I turned it on. Seemed to fine, except that it was requesting a software update. This I duly did (more goodies is only good news, no?!)
3. Software went to the reboot stage, then promptly froze.
4. I turned off after about 5 mins, then tried to manually reboot.
5. I got some squares on the screen and a faulty picture. Frozen display and flashing red lights on the console.
6. Tried again. This time, no display, just 3 red lights flashing and all else frozen.
7. Repeated 5 & 6, but mostly experienced 6.
8. Unplugged all wires and hard drive. No help
9. Off to xbox 360 website for help.
10. Red lights flashing and MS website suggested removing the AV connectors. This I tried, but did not help.
11. Back to website. Official support suggested the power supply could be the issue and deserved a dedicated socket to avoid overheating and current issues. And that if this did not work, ominously I would be faced with shipping to support.
12. But I tried unplugging the wires - so I was sceptical.
13. Dawned on me that unplugging the wires on the console had not rebooted the actual power supply brick.
14. Also rememembered we had hellish storms here in Geneva a few nights ago, with fuses tripping in the house.
15. So unplugged brick power supply and plugged it directly into wall socket instead of into extender cable with 4 other plugs.
16. Noticed that before unplugging, light on brick was orange. It was still orange even after replugging. This did not look good since I was hoping for a change of colour (does it change?).
17. Blew away cobwebs on brick for luck, checked it was not hot (quite cool reall, although we have 25C outside and about 20C ambient)
18. Before starting XBOX360 I once again unplugged all wires, hard drives and cables. I reattached the AV connector and the power supply.
19. Son was watching cartoons so refused to let me change chanel to see if this worked. But pushed start nevertheless.
20. This time, rotating green lights on the XBOX front console, and NO RED LIGHTS!!
21. Pursuaded son to change chanel briefly.
22. Yes - the wonderous sight of the XBOX360 blades were present and all seemed back to normal.
23. Have not played yet, and have a hunch the software update may still be a gremlin… in which case I may have to go in and delete the upgrade.
Conclusion:
I reckon the storms and tripping house fuses caused an issue. Plugging the Brick Supply into its own socket and then unplugging and reconnecting all wires seems to be the correct solution.
My faith in MS is resored. I would rather have a fail safe Power supply brick with built in power management than an exploding piece of hardware.
Good luck to rest,
Simon.

Xbox360 purchased at midnight of the launch date decided to give us the 3 red rings of death last night. I am not a happy person after reading all of the forums about how microsoft is obviously ignoring this widespread issue. I spoke with them calmly twice today and asked for a supv. Basically, I should thank my lucky stars that I was one of the launch systems and automatically got the extended year warranty. However, that doesn’t help me since the warranty ran out in Dec ‘06 so if I want any satisfaction, I have to bend to their LAW and pay for their defective machine and hope that it will never happen again (not likely) and hope that they actually give me a new machine (not likely), and hope that the sad refurb they try to pawn off on me for the bargain price of $140 will last until just before the warranty expires. My kids saved for this machine and we are all deep into this money wise. I am continuing to hunt for the home remedy fix so I won’t have to bend to them. I will be looking into the class action lawsuit end of this because it is just not right that so many people worldwide have a big, expensive Microsoft paperweight.
