Repair Xbox 360 - 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run “Initial Setup” under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don’t want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

I’ve had my 360 from just about the 1st day it came out. It has frozen on me every once in a while but only after extensive playing. Anywho, just today ,June 8, my 360 got redlighted. I just got home from my last day of shcool and was ready for some celebration gaming with the halo beta when BAM, red lights! Never had big problems before with my 360 and can’t belevie after about year and a half of no issues this happened. I’ve heard all of the horror stories and am ready to cry (not really). Had similar problem with my original xbox about 2 and a half years back and it took for ever to get fixed, and when it finally got back it didn’t work. Sent if back again and finally did. Can’t believe it worked this long and is now having trouble. Seems kind of fishy to me. MS should really get this figured out. Other than this though I’ve loved my orig xbox and my 360 and think they’re great systems, just needs to be more reliable.

I have owned my 360 for over a year with no problems. After the last update, the problems began. Games would begin to freeze or they would not load. Thinking it was due to overheating, I purchased the Nyko Fan adapter which helped for about a week. Today, I received the kiss of death (3 flashing red lights). I should have known better. If they are unable to produce a stable OS, what made me think that they could design and build a console. I should have waited for the PS3, but Microsoft won me over with the halo series. So I guess I am stuck.

I been reading alot about this and it seems that whats the problem here is an update bug or something, so far i have no problem with my system it could be due to the fact that i dont play online, beca it seems to be they like do everythign in a rush, besides that i read somewhere not to plug the xbox into a shared socket to plug it in into the wall so it has its on wall socket and not a shared one… Also if you have had an update why not erase it and go back to factory setting, you know like they say if its not broke why fix it… Microsoft needs to fix this soon or they will see alot of sales go down, i love the 360 and halo but im not rich, and the 360 is not cheap to buy to have it breat down like that… This better not happend to me cuz i will go and buy a ps3 and never touch a 360 again…

Its weird everybody had the 3 red lights but I had 2 red lights on my console. I found a good thread thanks to one of the guys here. But its said there that the 2 red lights might lead to the 3 red lights and then I will have to repair it.
Is it true? should I exchange my console before the warranty is over?
Now it is working great thanks to this thread - http://www.fixya.com/support/t152782-2_red_lights_ring_light
But how long will it last?

After a year my 360 is giving me the three lights and Im about to raise some hell. I think it is complete @#$@ that MS released this product and is no making money off the faulty product and i think its time that the thousands of people with faulty 360’s do something it and file lawsuits. maybe then we will get the product we all payed for. I know i didnt pay $400 for a peice of @$%#. I shouldn’t have to pay a dime for repairs on something I payed $400 for when my NES still works fine along with my Sega, SNES, Nintendo 64, and ps2.

Everyone that has posted or is suffering with problems all you have to do is phone the help lines in the masses and tell them that you can smell burning and see smoke everytime you turn your 360 on with the red lights of doom. If enough people do this it will cause a mass recall. with Full refunds for games and accessories included
