Repair Xbox 360 - 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run “Initial Setup” under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don’t want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

My system was purchased on 12-5-06 was crashing (freezing) daily within first 2 months.
Third month I got the 3 red lights of doom.
I had always kept it on top of large desk in airconditioned 65-72 deg. clean environment.
Heck, it still had all plastic protectors over infra red etc.
IT WAS IMPECCABLY CLEAN AND WELL KEPT !!!!!!
Had to send it in for repair. After 3 wks with no response about system status. I had to contact 4myXBox to find out status.
I was told that MYoriginal system had been repaired and was being shipped back to me.
Well, 3 days later I did recieve a console but it was not mine.
So, I guess they will tell you whatever you want to hear jut to get you off the phone.
Any hoo, the system they sent me is scratched up, marked up, noisey and probably over a year old. Not just used, but, abused !!!!
It looks like it had been kicked around by some 8yr old.
Now they say they will ship me my original back if, and when they fix it, but, they want me to ship this POS back now….
sooooo…. I guess I’ll have to do without again.
Seems that they would atleast replace it with a new or comperable system,
especially after I offered to pay for a new one if the would credit my acount upon recieving back this replacement JUNK!!!!!

My turn today, fired up GRAW2, froze, restarted the system, 3 rings. Tried unplugging the hard drive, got to see the globe thing freeze. Restarted again, 3-flashing-red-rings of certain death.
People have been saying - whats the point of the xbox360 core? Well here it is - for all those people who presumed their £320 console would work for longer than a year and didn´t gamble on the extended guarantee which imho is like betting on it breaking on the day you buy it.

1) I am having troubles with my X box 360 (Had it exactly 4 1/2 mos). The three lights of death are appearing. Funny this happens the same day I purchased a new game… Anyway I scrolled through the posts, and would like to add that so far my experience with MS on this issue has been good. Also a thank you to Thomas for his posts I am currently trying the towel trick, I hope it works so I can play until my Return box arrives.
2) I hope the new 65mn processor or whatever is available now.
3) May I add to those that posted about dumping the 360 for a Wii. These people obviously are not serios gamers. That system is limited in strength and is barely stronger than the original X - box. No thanks I’ll keep my cadillac, even if it needs to go in the shop more than that beetle…..
