Xbox 360 Three Red Light Repair

James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.

If you have this problem try this simple fix:

1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run "Initial Setup" under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.

*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don't want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

has anyone tried buying a new 360, swapping the new one with the old one (that doesnt work), switching the serial number stickers, and taking it back and say you just dont want it…then have a brand new 360 ? i know walmart is pretty lax on their return policy so let me know if anyone has tried it and if it has worked?

  7. walmart says:

i did this at best buy and it worked fine.
the new one i swapped also failed so fuck that idea.

  8. Bill Gates says:

Hahaha! Suckers! I have your money, and I don’t care if your XBox 360 works or not. Actually, I hope it breaks so you have to buy ANOTHER brand new one for $479 so you won’t feel so bad for being stupid enough to buy over ANOTHER $200 in accessories and over ANOTHER $300 in games. Hurry up, and send me your money. Daddy needs a new yacht.

  9. jor says:

how long before the one you swapped died? and what did/going to do now?

  10. Dude says:

Alas I have come across the 3 red lights of death. Up until now I have only thought of them as an urban legend. At least my 360 was still under warranty so microsoft will fix it for free. But now I cant play for a month till I get it back, and spider-man 3 comes out tommorow AHHHH!!! Anyway,my friends just crapped out too 2 days after the warranty was up, mine 3 days before. Is this a coincidence that the 360’s are failing at the end of their warranty’s or is microsoft (&*$%^$ us all over.
