Repair Xbox 360 – 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run "Initial Setup" under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don't want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

The magical 3 red lights is a fault in the video circuit normally a dry joint.i found if you open it up and press the ic’s in that top left corner and reboot it will work fine. just drop some resin or something there mines fine now.if ya got a temp controlled soldering iron have it on loot warm and go over the legs on the ic back of the rom drive. it will cure it. i live in the uk.we get a years waranty on our xbox360 as standard.but ive also had the 3 red lights appear ive emailed microsoft to complain about the poor reliability.i dont suppose they will reply
ive had my 360 since launch the 3 red lights appeared yesterday microsoft want £83 to fix it.they are well aware of the poor reliability of the 360.they should be repairing them for free for good customer relations.after reading some of these letters i dont think i will bother.bmight as well part exchange my games and get ps3
i bought my 360 in december 2006 and has been working fine until a week ago when i was visiting someone during spring break it started freezing randomly. all i had to do to fix it was wait about an hour. but when i returned home, it wouldnt even turn on, it just gave me the three lights of death…i waited about 8 hours to see if it would fix itself, but that didn’t work either. now i have to freaking wait while microsoft repairs it. any tips before i send it for repair???

Just bought mine today, came home, set up the HD connections so it would run in 1080i, played the game Gears of War for about an hour, turned it off. Then later that night tried to turn it on and I get the 3 lights. BS…I’m returning it… and not sure if I want to buy another one…
WRAP THE 360 IN LIKE 4 OR 5 TOWELS FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES!!! LET IT GET REALLY HOT THEN SHUT IT OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON!!! I AM NOT LYING AND TRYING TO GET YOU TO KILL YOUR XBOX… BESIDES WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE TO LOOSE??? YOU CANT PLAY IT, BUT IT REALLY DOES WORK
I purchased my 360 at launch… after having several problems i have come to the conclusion that the xbox live techs are complete idiots who couldn’t solve there way out of a paper bag. now i have 3 flashing red lights. if i could afford it i would get the elite but its probably going to have its own issues … damn the world
