Repair Xbox 360 – 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run "Initial Setup" under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don't want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

I bouhgt my Xbox I couln´t even play once. I cannot believe I have to pay an extra 80 quids to fix it. There should be a solution to this general problem. Let´s complain and get at least a new Xbox!!
My 360 started freezing up on me last night, and then finally there was no signal to the tv (the screen is black, no input detected) and the 3 red lights went off. how can i do the steps above if i cant get anything to come up on the screen?
My xbox 360 lasted about 1 1/4 years and I got 3 red lights and they want 167 Canadian to fix, after reading all these postings I won’t bother fixing system. I will buy something else
Yup, about 1 1/4 years for me too. What a total frick’n bummer. Fortunately, I only purchased 6 games, remote, memory card, and HD cord. So, I figure I only have a mere $750 sunk into this POS. No way I am sinking even more.
NOTE: If you buy the sytem from Costco, which I did not, you can return it at anytime if you have your receipt. Can’t loose and you don’t have to deal with MS.
Some of you will remember the oh so frequent PS2 “Disk read error”. The difference is that sony had the decency to repair the problem free of charge (even after the warranty). Microsuck is doing a big mistake treating is custumer like they do now. I’m also pretty pissed off at the gaming industry (and gaming sites) for not publicising or putting pressure on Microsuck to address the problem. We are the ones that get this industry going, we invest our hard earn money in those next gen products. We deserve at least to be treated with the minimum respect…
buy a ps3 and no problem would happen idiots better not any problem at all
my sons broke and stupidly tried to open his anyone know where u can get the security seal since he broke it and now i cant get the shop to take it back
That thing is over heated to hell you can smell it from my downstairs kitchen… Time to take that thing in for repairs and if you got the warranty then you should be ok if you get a return box and they’ll send it back for free. (Only Eastern Side Of US)
same boat, had mine since march 06, got that Lost Planet in january, console started locking up on almost every loading screen (thought it was this game alone as no other games caused problems), played GRAW 2 no problems, let me nephew play it,it locks up, then back to working fine, not used it for a week after that, switched it on 9/4/07, yep u gussed it 3 red lights. unpluged everything no avail, tried precussion maintaince (only once though), got back to 3 lights, locks up, restart, its gone back to reds again. typically the warrantys expired, found this site, at least im not alone. does makes me wonder if i should even bother calling tech support, think ill wait for the elite to come out, MS wouldnt release a new faulty product………… would they?
seriously, are they just gonna stand hear and suck our money up or are actually going to make an attempt to staify the customers because this is some *&%^$ man.i had my box for 7 months.i was playin rainbow on live until i heard my box makin noises, so i restarted it an i got the three red lights.i called Cs n they tell me im still in warranty but thats the not even the main concern right now because WHEN this happens again and im out of warranty, im screwed.Money doesent come out of my *&^ i refuse to pay thes idiots 130 everytime for something that isnt ov my fault.i think i smell a PS3 this summer, well see.
