Repair Xbox 360 – 3 Red Lights
James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.
If you have this problem try this simple fix:
1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run "Initial Setup" under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.
*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don't want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

Just to update you on my status.
I sent my 360 off December 1, 2006.
It was manufactured January 5, 2006.
Died June 2006. Just 6 months old
Microsoft did reduce the fee from $139.00 to $69.00 for the repair, and I had to pay shipping, but I got a new, 90 day warranty.
Well, after all the many, many hours of calling, emailing, faxing, and working on the website,

I finally paid Microsoft and shipped the 360 off to the REFURB FACILITY.
It went off December 1st.
Got it back FAST, December 8th.
Unfortunately:
THE REPLACEMENT / REFURBISHED xbox 360 was one from back in 2005, the ones known to be defective! And the now, replacement IS DEFECTIVE ALSO!
The one they sent me is defective in this way,
If it is sitting up,
the cd rom will not open,
and if I lay it down flat,
the cd rom opens really, really slowly!
I implored them to SEND ME A BRAND NEW XBOX 360
not a
REFURBISHED, OLD XBOX 360…. THEY REFUSED.
Now I have to send it back only to get yet
ANOTHER REFURBISHED PIECE OF JUNK.
I will report what happens next.

Its a terrible thing that I have allready bought all these 360 games and my Xbox of 11 month got the VIRUS (3 lights of death) It would surprice me that it could be a virus that was intentionally planted in the machines so that after I have spend over 1000 bucks they still want more money. Good thing PS3 came out because I’m not buying one more 360 games. Thanks for nothing Microsoft.

One last thing…
If you fit into the below catagory,
You have an xbox 360 that does not work.
You have bought a bunch of $60.00 games.
You are an American.
You have had your box for more than 90 days.

You need to focus on going ahead and paying the $69.00 bucks to get yours fixed, then you will have a 90 day warranty, and then you can pay about 40 bucks and get a 2 year warranty.
If you get IN warranty, all shipping, and repairs are FREE, this includes the HARD DRIVE!
Know this, when you send in your 360 for repairs, you many get another piece of junk, so be ready to ship your 360 many, many times. But atleast after you do what I said above, you will be able to do it for free!
OR
Sell all that junk n get a PS3.

Umm.. i had the 3 rings of flashing red lights.. and i jacked with the dang thing for 3 hours.. took it out.. fliped it upside down to get the sierial number off the back.. fliped it back up.. and the lights were gone?! Dunno.. but xbox still sucks!

3 rings of doom…..sending it back tomorrow – don’t have time or energy for this. Had two original Xbox’s for years and no problems.
If they don’t pleasantly surpise me with a fast repair I’m a lost consumer to them who has spent over $3500 on Xbox games over the last few years.

the ring of death happened to me today, i was able to wait 5 minutes though and turn it back on, did this happen to anyone else. It is working fine now
