Xbox 360 Three Red Light Repair

James at joystiq fixed his own 360 that was flashing three red lights, which indicates an internal error.

If you have this problem try this simple fix:

1) Remove your hard drive and/or memory units.
2) Run “Initial Setup” under the system blade.
3) Decline inserting HDD or memory unit when prompted.
4) Sync your controller and pop in a game.

*** UPDATE *** Microsoft has a new free warranty of 3 years for the 3 red light error. If you have this problem, you can send your console in for free repair. Or, if you don’t want to pay shipping and have to wait 2-3 weeks, you can attempt to fix it yourself.

Mine got the dreaded 3 flashing red lights. I e-mailed Microsoft and still have not received a response. When calling (1-800-4MyXBox), first I got a dead link on the menu. Then I got a guy who barely understood English. After he asked me 4 times if I had unplugged the unit and the cables, then putting me on hold for 30 min. I got “You’ll have to call back in 24 hours, Our system is down.” I asked him what we’d accomplished to this point and he said “I’m sorry, sir , nothing”. At which point I hung up on him. I think I’m about to get the “run-a-round”.

I tried turning it on without the dvd drive connected and it boots up to the dashboard with no apparent problem. As soon as I plug in the drive everything goes to &*%. Anybody else try this?

Just &*%^@ enough and ask for a supervisor, I went from $130 to $34 for repair.

Same probolem, I am thinking about exchanging it at Target where I bought it but I don’t have the receipt, Everyone thathas been in here should complain to Microsoft for doing this, I wonder if they maybe programmde this to get money. It seems that they are because of the 130$ fee, I am very unimpressed with them, Good going microsoft.

My system worked fine for about 5 months, up until a couple of days ago I was playing halo 2 and it froze, I was like “ok…?…no big deal” cuz it’s a computer and they tend to do that…worked fine 1 day after this, yesterday I was going to play PGR3 and boom it froze, turned it off an back on several times and all I got was the “rings of death” so I called them up and was on the phone for about 2 hours with bunch of morons who did not know about basic networking, I ended up teaching them basic stuff, what a joke, finally got a supervisor who apologized and agreed to have my xbox repaired. I bought the 2 year warranty but this is still not right, what about the people who did not buy the warranty…file a complaint with www.bbb.org, this is a rip off (I hope I don’t get a refurbushied one and I will DEMAND free games and a wireless controller for all my troubles)

Hello people, im sorry to hear what problem came with the xbox360, i myself havent buy the 360 yet, but thats what happen when u buy the first batch of consoles of any type you know? anyways my point with ppl saying that they are waiting for the PS3 to buy it right away, you think $130 is bad?lol well , as i work in a Famous Gaming store (we’ll just leave it at that) i know how much problem the first batch of ps3’s will have, and at 700$ a pop, (if u lucky and reserve it) if not $1500 on ebay, you will have to pay alot more then $130 for repairs, trust me, its not worth getting ANY system at first, but dont get me wrong, i would love be the first one to get that new shiny ps3, its just simply not worth it.
thank you for your time.
