Difference Between Xbox 360 Core and Xbox 360 “Preimum”

The Xbox 360 is available in two flavors, regular and lite. The Maniac sez, get a "Premium" 360 with all the goodies. You'll be glad you did.

The Xbox 360 "Premium"
Xbox 360 Premium
The main Xbox kit, is really just "Xbox 360." It has gained the "premium" name by the public, in order to easily tell the difference.

It also comes in a white box, easy to spot for all 360 maniacs. This is the one you want to see Santa bringing down the chimney.

The Xbox 360 sells for $399.00 and includes the following:

Console
Detachable hard drive (20 GB)
2.4 GHz Wireless Controller
Xbox-Live Headset
Component HD-AV cable
Xbox Live Silver membership
One month limited trial membership for Xbox Live Gold
Ethernet cable
Media Remote

The Xbox 360 Core System
Xbox 360 Core System

The core system is just what the name says, the basic core console. This unit comes in the green box.

The Core System sells for $299 and includes:
Console
Wired Controller with 9ft break-away cable
Standard AV cable
Xbox Live Silver membership
One month limited trial membership for Xbox Live Gold

That's it!

So, if you get the green box (core system), you get no wireless on the controller, no hard drive, no xbox live headset, no ethernet cable and no media remote.

The biggest difference here, is the hard drive. Why? Cuz you need it or a memory unit to save games. The main reason though, is you need it to play your old original xbox games in their new widescreen High Definition glory.

Not worried about old games? Couldn't care less about wireless controllers? Don't have an hdtv? Not worried about save games? (huh?) You won't be playing xbox live? The core system might be for you, but if you answered no to all of these questions, why have a 360 in the first place?

The harddrive alone sells for $100. Why not pony it up to start with, and get the rest for no additional bucks?

Go for the white box, you'll be better off.

Ok guys, im getting a core from a friend that has bought 2, for 300$ instead of the tax installed 335$, Its unopened, also if I buy a harddrive, will I be able to play live games? Another thing is, how much would it be to purchase the high def cables, even tho currently I only have a stand tv. Future reference, How hard is it to install the harddrive? Pretty much all I wanna know is, besides the wireless controllers, and the chrome harddrive, how much and what all would I have to buy to make the core EXACLY! Like the premium.

  2. Chuck says:

Is it even possible? Cause im saving 35$ so I can put that toward, maybe the remote? Im so sketchy on this guys from my seriously limited infomation.

  3. “if I buy a harddrive, will I be able to play live games?”
Yep, hard drive or memory unit needed for LIVE.

“how much would it be to purchase the high def cables”
    40 bucks

“How hard is it to install the harddrive?”
Piece of cake – snaps right in. (it’s mounted externally and you just pop it in)

“Pretty much all I wanna know is, besides the wireless controllers, and the chrome harddrive (DVD door actually), how much and what all would I have to buy to make the core EXACLY! Like the premium.”

    1) Hard drive – 100 bucks

    2) The bonus remote is a limited run, and I don’t know if you can buy it separately, I haven’t looked. The full size remote is available for 30 bucks.

    3) The live headset is 20 bucks, but you may wait on a higher quality 3rd party one, the quality on this one is weak. (May take a while and will probably cost more.)

    4) HD cable – 40 bucks

    5) Ethernet cable. I’m not sure what the xbox branded one runs, but all you need is a standard Cat5 networking cable. Easily found for 10 bucks or less.

So, if you have a Core system and want to buy all the stuff that would come with a premium that is:

    100 Hard Drive
    30 DVD remote
    20 LIVE headset
    40 HD cable
    10 Ethernet cable

    200 more dollars

If you wanted a wireless controller as well (to add to the wired one that comes with the Core package), add another 50.

I think that sums it up.

  4. Chuck says:

Ok well I can make it exacly like it hmm …. Well I already have the cat 5, from the first x box, when I play live on that one I already have a headset, I already have a dvd player, so im only look at on top of the 300$ 140$ so 40 dollars more? which I get to make up with the 35$ What all is the dvd remote for? and Im not getting high def cables till I get a better t.v.

  5. Chuck says:

sorry for the bother I just wanna make sure im not screwing up.

  6. Chuck says:

One more, If I purchase the hard drive, will it be backwards compatable?

  7. Original xbox headset will not work with the 360.

The remote is mainly for DVD player control. I haven’t even put the batts in mine.

You will be able to play the backwards compatible games if you get the hard drive.

No bother, glad to help. You won’t be “screwing up” but you do get more for your money with a premium.

If you can get your hands on a core now and only really need a couple more items, go for it. You can hold out for the premium and get all the goods, it just depends on how bad you want it.

Wireless controllers are a big plus to me. I had extensions on the original xbox controllers, and the wireless really is handy.

  8. Chuck says:

Thanks alot bra for clearing everything up. Yeah I cant wait any longer. Ummm …. I dont wanna deal with a wireless controller, if I really decide to get one I can get one for myself and let my friends use the cord one, cause im gonna want 2 controllers anyways. Whats the deal with only 2 controller ports, is it like that in the premium as well?

  9. Chuck says:

In call of duty 2, is the multiplayer cooperative only?

  10. Bruce says:

I’m *extremely* sceptical of Microsoft’s backwards compatability with Xbox 360. They were very cunning in the live promotion before launch. “We are proud to pronounce that Xbox360 will support backwards compatability (*gets the applause that they wanted to smooth things over*, and whilst the applause is still going on…) for the top selling Xbox games.” I’m sorry but thats not backwards compatability…
All it means is that games like Halo 2 etc. and PGR2 etc. are going to be playable in some fashion, like the classics range they are bringing out these days will probably function on a 360. This isn’t concrete but the fact remains that I highly doubt *every* game is backwards compatible, and if so that was extremely disrespectful to the gamers to go and deliberately publicly misadvertise…
